Animal Attendant (Cat Team)

About Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS)

Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) is a not-for-profit leading animal welfare organisation providing best practice care, education, shelter, re-homing, and community veterinary services across the Geelong region.

GAWS was established in 1956 and take pride on delivering animal welfare and management services through the aide of generous support via the community. The organisation has a long and proud history having serviced the local community for over 60 years, and an ongoing commitment to its values of Respect and Integrity, Teamwork, Accountability, Leadership and Learning.

GAWS are looking for additional Casual Animal Attendants to join the team providing quality care and support in the Cats section only. Ideally GAWS are seeking candidates who have previous Cat handling experience.

About the Role

GAWS are seeking Casual Animal Care Attendants to provide ongoing care and support in the Cats team. key responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Providing support across a wide range of duties using best practice animal husbandry specifically in the Cats team.
  • Ability to liaise with medical staff and action treatment plans.
  • Experience and ability to medicate cats.
  • Experience with young kittens/newborns and birthing mother cats an advantage (as one role will be in the Kitten Quarantine area).
  • Work alongside the team to ensure exceptional animal welfare is maintained.
  • Provide quality care of animals on site including animal movement, site cleanliness, and accurate record management.
  • Ensure care, grooming, feeding, and cleanliness is adhered to in line with regulations.
  • Assist with admission procedures and ensure all administration records and systems are up to date.
  • Provide exceptional customer service for all enquiries via phone, email and in person visits.
  • Work collaboratively within the team and take on additional duties as required.
  • Provide backup support to the customer service team.

This is a casual position with remuneration in line with the award and your qualifications, skills and experience. Opportunity to develop and progress with the organisation are also encouraged.

About You

GAWS are seeking applications from candidates with Cat handling experience and who have a strong interest in supporting the work of GAWS. Candidates need to have previous experience in a similar role specifically working with Cats and a passion for animal care and welfare.

You will have excellent organisational skills, the ability to prioritise workload and work well within a positive team. Given the nature our work you may need to work across challenging situations which require empathy, compassion and commitment to compliance and regulations.

We are seeking attendants who have excellent communication skills and an excellent customer service ethic.

The Musts

  • Certificate in Animal Studies or relevant experience with 12+ months in similar role
  • Experience with cat handling and behaviour
  • Experience with young kittens/newborns and birthing mother cats an advantage (one role is available in the Kitten Quarantine area)
  • Ability to liaise with medical staff and action treatment plans including medicating cats
  • Ability to work across 7 days during opening hours/including public holidays
  • Exceptional time management
  • Strong team orientated focus with a willingness to learn
  • Excellent customer service ethic
  • Good knowledge of all Microsoft applications
  • Familiarity with Sheltermate and customer logic systems is highly desirable
  • Police Check or willing to obtain
  • Australia Drivers Licence
