have you thought about updating your resume

Have you thought about updating your résumé?

From time to time you have thought about updating your résumé but when is the last time you actually made any changes?

Maybe you have been comfortable where you are working now. You might have been in the same job for a long time. If you are lucky, you have moved from one position to the next through word of mouth and never needed one. Whatever the reason, it hasn’t been your top priority, but you will get to it one day. Right?

But what if your dream job suddenly comes available?

It happens all the time. A friend or former colleague calls you about a job that would be perfect for you. You didn’t even realise that you were interested in making a move until an opportunity unexpectedly shows itself.

It is not uncommon for my phone to ring with someone desperately looking to get their résumé updated for a vacancy that closes in a few days. The chances of a professional résumé writer being able to fit you in for an appointment and produce a job-winning résumé at short notice is slim. Now you are updating your résumé at the last minute, scrambling to throw something together and hope for the best. Not the ideal way to present yourself as the best candidate for the job.

Update your résumé once a year

You will be amazed at how many new skills, knowledge, duties, training and achievements can develop in just a year.  Update your résumé while it’s fresh in your mind.  When I look back on what I did years ago, I am surprised by how much I have forgotten. It isn’t easy to try to document 20 years of work by memory.

So if you have been thinking about updating your résumé, dig it out, have a read, and get started. Set yourself the goal of upgrading your résumé ready for the new year. That way you will be prepared if a great opportunity presents itself tomorrow.

My HR career began over 25 years ago after completing a Bachelor of Business with a major in Human Resources. I worked for large companies and gained experience across various industries, including IT, building and construction, oil and gas and automotive. One of my most rewarding roles was HR Manager for a business with fewer than 50 employees. In this role, I worked with the leadership team to build a solid foundation for the management and engagement of their employees. So, when I decided to start my own business in 2013, I focused on bringing my HR experience to small businesses that do not have in-house HR support but still have the same issues around managing their people. Over the last eleven plus years, I have been privileged to work with hundreds of businesses nationwide. I love that we help them gain peace of mind, knowing they are meeting their HR obligations, finding the right staff, or supporting them through stressful employee situations. What I love most is the fantastic team of HR professionals who have joined me on the Strawberry Seed journey. As any small business owner knows, bringing in others to work with your clients can be daunting. Each and every member of the Strawberry Seed team is a true asset to their profession and our brand. I unequivocally could not do this without them.
